Storgata 1

A complete transformation of a 1980s office building in the heart of Sandefjord, preserving the structural framework and adding a new glazed facade across 6,000 square metres. The southwest facing elevations needed effective solar control without compromising the light and views that define the workspace. 850 square metres of shading integrated into triple glazing resolved both.

Storgata 1 is a complete transformation of the former Norske Liv building in the heart of Sandefjord, designed by Schjelderup Trondahl Arkitekter. Rather than demolishing and rebuilding, the entire structural framework was preserved, saving an estimated 1,000 tonnes of CO2 compared to new construction. An extension on the north side created more efficient floor space, and a new sixth floor was added, giving the building a fresh identity while remaining firmly rooted in its city centre location.

Offices, meeting rooms, common areas and terraces throughout the 6,000 square metre building were designed with a focus on creating an inspiring and healthy working environment, with the harbour, shops and restaurants of central Sandefjord just a short distance away.

850 square metres of MicroShade® triple glazing with Super Spacer® was produced in partnership with Glaseksperten A/S and integrated across the facade in units up to three metres in height. The southwest orientation of key elevations made solar control a critical part of the brief. The passive microstructure manages heat gain while maintaining maximum natural daylight and unobstructed views across the city and towards the waterfront. The result is a workplace that stays comfortable and bright throughout the year, without blinds, without glare and without the need for mechanical intervention..
