Passive solar shading, built into the glass.

Project Case

A building designed for children. And built to last.

A circular timber daycare building in the new Vejle district of Ny Rosborg, designed by Pluskontoret Arkitekter for 120 children across seven groups. Sustainability and the everyday wellbeing of children and staff were at the heart of every specification decision. MicroShade® integrated across the entire outward-facing facade ensures bright, comfortable spaces all year round without external shading systems or mechanical complexity.

A building designed for children. And built to last.

On Nordholmen in the new district of Ny Rosborg in Vejle, the Rosborg Daginstitution stands as the first completed building in a new neighbourhood being built from the ground up. Designed by Pluskontoret Arkitekter and engineered by DRIAS Rådgivende Ingeniører, the circular building was conceived around sustainability, resilience and the everyday lives of children and staff.

The building houses seven groups across nursery and kindergarten, with group rooms, shared gathering spaces, a production kitchen, a creative atelier and a rooftop terrace with public access via the lookout tower known as Vindens Tårn. Its distinctive round form is clad in thermally treated timber, constructed from prefabricated timber modules and a glulam column and beam system, with pile foundations sunk 22 metres into the soft ground of the former wetland below.

Sustainability was central to every decision on the project, with both the building and its pedagogical principles rooted in the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Passive solar shading was integrated directly into the outward-facing facade glazing across the entire building perimeter, ensuring comfortable indoor temperatures and generous natural daylight in every group room throughout the year. No external shading systems, no mechanical controls and no impact on the clean, warm architectural expression that defines the building.

The result is a daycare that puts children at the centre, with bright, comfortable spaces that stay connected to the outdoors at all times and a building that will perform as well in thirty years as it does today.
