Esbjerg Realskole
Large glass façades bring daylight into classrooms, but they also bring heat. At Esbjerg Realskole, MicroShade® was integrated into the glazing to reduce overheating while preserving daylight and views.
Daylight that supports learning, without overheating
At Esbjerg Realskole, generous daylight was a central architectural ambition. Large glazed areas were designed to bring natural light deep into classrooms and common spaces, supporting focus, well-being and a strong connection to the outdoors. The school’s distinctive copper canopy, a defining feature of the building, has also been renovated as part of the project.
Before MicroShade was installed, the large window areas introduced notable challenges with overheating and glare, particularly in the assembly hall during warmer periods. Significant temperature fluctuations made the space uncomfortable, and traditional shading solutions would either block daylight, require manual operation or interfere with the architectural expression of the building.
Designing better learning environments with daylight and comfort in balance
MicroShade was integrated directly into the glazing across 96 pieces of 2-layer insulating glass, produced by Glaseksperten A/S. The passive solar shading works automatically throughout the day, reducing high-angle solar radiation while preserving clear views and high daylight levels. With no moving parts and no maintenance requirements, the solution supports a calm and stable learning environment without the need for blinds or external shading.
When students and staff returned in August, the improvements were immediately noticeable. Lighting conditions in the assembly hall were significantly better, and the temperature fluctuations that had previously made the space difficult to use are now regulated more naturally. The result is a comfortable, consistent indoor climate that supports concentration throughout the school day and contributes to lower long-term energy demand.

Yes. The product integrates into standard double or triple glazed units and is suitable for both new construction and retrofit projects. No mechanical systems, no wiring and no structural modifications are required.
There is no impact on the building exterior and no additional trades are needed beyond the glazing contractor already on the project.
The microstructure film sits protected inside the glazing cavity and is almost imperceptible to the naked eye, though the join between sheets is visible on close inspection. From the outside the facade looks clean and as designed.
From the inside the view out remains clear and unobstructed at all times. No tint, no visible pattern and no reduction in the quality of the outlook.
